Parents teach five children at home – Aquittal by administrative court

April 29, 2003

Alsfeld – Five children in a county seat have not been sent to school for about one and a half years. Yesterday, the administrative court acquitted the parents of disregarding mandatory school attendance laws. Among other things, the question of demerit awoke a doubt in Judge Dr. Wolf as to whether a conviction would make any sense. In his opinion, he wrote that the parents did not keep the children away from school arbitrarily, with ill will and ignoring their duty. Instead, with great dedication, they provided what they considered an adequate substitute. This dedication should set an example for many parents, who merely formally fulfill the mandatory attendance requirements, said the judge.
